How to Bend Gene Thumbs

(Or, "An End to Ripped Sleeves")

This is an easy way to bend Gene and Madra's thumbs so that they won't snag and tear delicate gloves and sleeves.

Step 1: Pick out a clean saucepan, and fill it with hot water 4 or 5 inches deep. You don't want shallow water, because it forces you to hold the doll's hand too close to the burner.

Step 2: When the water gets hot (almost to boiling is enough), dip her hand in the water to the wrist. Hold it under for several seconds. (This is also a good opportunity to force a full confession out of your doll, if necessary.)

Step 3: Pull her hand out, and see if you can bend the thumb in with your fingers (don't use tools). If you can't, just submerge it for a while longer. Bend the thumb a little further in than the way you want it to stay, because it will spring back a little.

Step 4: Then just hold the thumb with your fingers until it gets hard again (a couple of minutes). Presto! Bent thumb.
